Organic Acids Test (OAT)

It happens to lots of people like you who are suffering from gut problems or a chronic illness – you know something is wrong, but your standard lab tests all keep coming back as “normal.” You’re frustrated, confused, and worried you’ll never really find relief.

Assessing your gut health has, thankfully, gotten easier with all the functional medical advances in recent years. One test that your Nava Center practitioner may recommend is call the Organic Acids Test, or OAT for short.

What is the Organic Acids Test?

The OAT measures and evaluates the organic acids that are excreted in your urine – it’s a comprehensive metabolic snapshot of 76 markers of various functions of your body. Organic acids, which are also known as metabolites, are products of our metabolism, the process of breaking down food for energy.

What Does the Organic Acids Test Do?

The OAT measures the organic acids in your urine – since the body can’t readily reabsorb them, they’re found in high amounts in your urine. It can evaluate metabolic imbalances in your body, including levels of intestinal yeast and bacteria.

Metabolic dysfunctions uncovered by the organic acids test can include:

  • Chronic inflammation
  • Ketosis or poor carbohydrate metabolism
  • Gut dysfunction
  • Amino acid deficiency
  • Insulin resistance
  • Toxicology
  • Acid/alkaline imbalance

Many people with chronic illnesses and neurological disorders often excrete several abnormal organic acids in their urine. Abnormally high levels of organic acids can cause or worsen behavior disorders, hyperactivity, movement disorders, fatigue and immune function. The cause of these high levels could include oral antibiotic use, high sugar diets, immune deficiencies, acquired infections, as well as genetic factors.

The organic acids test is just one tool in the complete arsenal of complete medical testing to determine the root cause of chronic or acute illnesses like IBS, gut dysfunction, immune disorders and more. You may need additional testing like stool tests to get a complete picture of what is going on in your body. But the organic acids test is a powerful tool to help pinpoint areas of your metabolism and overall health that are causing symptoms and health issues in your body as a whole.

Organic Acids Testing at Nava Center

Our Organic Acids Test also includes markers for vitamin and mineral levels, oxidative stress, neurotransmitter levels, and is the only OAT to include markers for oxalates, which are highly correlated with many chronic illnesses.

If abnormalities are detected using the OAT, treatments can include supplements, such as vitamins and antioxidants, or dietary modification. After treatment, many of our patients have reported significant improvements such as less fatigue, improved gut function, increased energy and alertness, increased concentration, and decreased abdominal pain.

When combined with the integrative approach of the Nava Method, you will finally be able to achieve your overall wellness goals and feel your 100% again. All the systems in our bodies work together – when they are in harmony, we feel well and whole again. Get the information and support you need to achieve your goals with Nava Center today.
