Oprah is back! And she sure picked a lightning rod of a topic to build a special around, medical weight loss. Oprah’s recent special on weight loss medications like Ozempic has sparked a national conversation.

I, for one, love that Oprah is shining her great light on this subject because as a physician practicing in the integrative medicine space, I am very much in support of the new class of weight loss medications.

Oprah’s Ozempic Journey

Taking the weight loss medication discussion beyond the injection. While GLP-1 and similar weight loss medications can be a valuable tool, they should be part of a more comprehensive solution. While Oprah was trying to provide an unbiased and informative view of these new weight loss drugs, I got the impression she agreed.

In integrative and functional medicine, the application of our medical training is laser-focused on identifying the root cause of issues. Our goal is to identify and treat comprehensively so that we are treating the root cause, not just the symptoms.

Obesity a Chronic Disease

Obesity is a brilliant example of a root cause condition that causes a cascade of issues and provides the perfect formula for chronic disease.

When looking at the root causes of weight gain, more often, it’s a combination of factors like stress, hormonal imbalances, sleep issues, and even hidden gut issues. These factors can disrupt our natural hunger and satiety cues, making weight management a constant battle.

Ozempic and similar GLP-1 weight loss drugs work by mimicking gut hormones that regulate appetite and blood sugar. This can lead to significant weight loss. Not only do the GLP-1 weight loss medications, like Semaglutide,  address physical weight loss. However, these drugs also help the mental struggle and load that so many experience when making changes to how they eat.

Overcoming decades of poor misinformation and eating habits does not just happen overnight. Therefore, the intelligence of these medications is that they provide that extra boost of innate willpower. This gives people the chance to make informed and meaningful changes to their lifestyle and diet, allowing for long-term sustained weight loss beyond the use of the medications.

Think of it like resetting your thermostat. For instance, it might keep the temperature comfortable for a while, but if the furnace itself is malfunctioning, the problem will return.

The integrative medicine goal is to address what contributed to weight gain in the first place to set you up for long-term success. This could include addressing a hormone imbalance or a gut intolerance in addition to the weight loss program. This multi-pronged approach can help with weight loss and provides the education and framework to create sustainable lifestyle changes.
